Herbal medicine and supplements for dogs and cats
Which plants can I give my dog or cat naturally? Some plants and natural supplements can support your dog's or cat's general well-being, as a complement to a balanced diet — never as a replacement.
- Seaweed and algae (spirulina, chlorella, dulse) are rich in protein, minerals and antioxidants; they are often used as a course to support vitality, especially in older animals or during growth.
- Brewer's yeast is a natural source of B vitamins, good for the skin and coat of dogs and cats.
- Sprouted seeds (wheat, alfalfa, lentils) are rich in easily absorbed vitamins and minerals.
- Turmeric, black cumin and thyme are spices traditionally used in small amounts in food for their recognized properties.
- Flaxseed provides omega-3s, useful for coat and skin quality.
- Nettle, parsley and horsetail are plants traditionally used for their richness in vitamins and minerals (parsley should be used in moderation).
- Garlic, often mentioned in "natural" recipes, should be avoided: it is toxic to dogs and cats alike, even in small repeated amounts.
- Pollen can be used to support general vitality, especially in older animals.
